Reduce Soil Hazard Using Immobilisation

Reduce Soil Hazard Using Immobilisation

Former shooting ranges are known for lead exposure risks.

Peruse a few journal articles and you will come to understand that where there is lead, leachable lead contamination oftentimes results. This can lead to expensive and invasive sampling programs and exhaustive on ground remediation efforts.

The former shooting area at the Woods Road, Truganina site was no exception when it came to total concentrations (mg/kg) and leachable (mg/l) lead hits across the site. Following targeted sampling, excavation, and treatment works – approximately 6,000 tonnes of leachable lead impacted soil were treated and disposed of.

Our site team carefully relocated and treated the lead impacted soils guided by an in-house tailored and data-driven leachable lead immobilisation treatment trial work.

Employing a combination of tried and tested reagents to the lead impacted soils, we were able to reduce the soil hazard category and facilitate offsite disposal. By applying our immobilisation works and liaising with the Victorian EPA regarding the reclassification of this formerly Category A contaminated soil, we saved our client significant expenditure on disposal costs.

Our timely delivery of this project meant the residential development occurring alongside our remediation works could safely continue, and future residents are no longer potentially exposed to dangerous lead contamination.

Summary:

  • 6,000 tonnes of leachable lead impacted soil treated
  • Residents are no longer exposed to dangerous contamination
