Historic Fitzroy Gasworks remediation to commence in 2019
September 19, 2018
Enviropacific is pleased to announce it has been awarded the contract to remediate the former Fitzroy Gasworks site in Victoria, reaffirming the company’s growing reputation as an industry leader in applied science and engineering solutions.
This project is a major win for the company and offers a significant urban renewal opportunity for Melbourne’s inner north, with a focus on mixed-use development including; housing, recreation, education and retail. The contract is the culmination of an enormous effort by Enviropacific’s Victorian and National Support teams.
Enviropacific is working closely with Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) to conduct a final investigation and comprehensive remediation strategy for the site. Remediation works are expected to commence in 2019 and continue throughout the following two years to deliver this significant redevelopment project in the most effective and time-efficient manner possible. We endeavour to manage productivity and minimise impacts on neighbouring residents.
Built in 1859, the Fitzroy Gasworks was a key supplier of gas to Melbourne until closing in 1927. The site remained in operation as a workshop and gas storage facility until the 1970s when the inner-city’s three large gasometers were pulled down.
The site was redeveloped in the early 1980s to its current layout supporting commercial use with a number of remnant gasworks structures and buildings. Part of the site is in use as the Yarra Council Municipal Depot, with the remainder leased to individual tenants. Since 2014, only short-term tenants have occupied the Site.
Given the site’s use as a former gasworks, there are extensive remediation works required before any construction can start. The renewal opportunity combined with previous clean up notices issued by the Victorian EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) provide an impetus to remediate the site now.
This is the second concurrent gasworks remediation contract win for Enviropacific, following our commencement of the Goulburn Gasworks remediation project on behalf of Jemena. We look forward to instilling our capabilities as an industry leader in applied science and engineering solutions, managing some of the most complex environmental projects in Australia.
