Cadway Design First 5 Star Green Star Certified Service Centre in Australia
December 5, 2018
Enviropacific’s design and engineering practice Cadway is proud to have completed the concept design for Australia’s first 5 Star Green Star Highway Service Centre.
This proposed development for Spectrum Retail Group is positioned halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, on the Pacific Highway at the gateway to Kempsey - one of the largest regional cities in New South Wales.
This benchmark project utilises the latest sustainable design principals and technologies to shape the future of fuel and convenience retail developments across the country. A wide range of environmental initiatives are being considered to achieve 5 Star Green Star certification including natural lighting and ventilation, green wall and roof systems, solar and wind power generation in addition to water harvesting and reuse systems.
Environmentally sustainable design practices are at the core of this project, utilising environmentally friendly and locally sourced construction materials along with smart design elements to lower power and water consumption.
“For too long Highway Service Centres have been built with functionality at the forefront – a place to fill up your car, eat something quickly on plastic chairs and tables before setting off again on your journey” says Spectrum Retail Group’s Executive Director, Julian Ackad.
“We’ve set out to create a destination – a place that people actually enjoy, a place that enhances the community while being environmentally responsible at every step of the way. Our vision is to deliver Australia’s first 5 Star Green Star Certified Highway Service Centre and in doing so create a talking point in the industry to influence positive change.
To bring this vision to reality we have sought to build the best possible team. We interviewed five architects and selected Cadway due to their experience in designing state-of-the-art Highway Service Centres together with sharing a genuine excitement to design an industry leading development in terms of environmental credentials”
Green Star is a building sustainability rating system launched by the Green Building Council of Australia in 2003. The system assesses development, buildings and refurbishments against a range of environmental impact categories and aims to:
• Encourage leadership in environmentally sustainable design and construction
• Showcase innovation in sustainable building strategies
• Consider occupant health, productivity and operational cost savings
• Utilise numerous passive design initiatives in response to the natural environment
While the development has an official goal of operating under an Australian Best Practice 5 Star rating, Spectrum Retail Group and Cadway are aiming to achieve World Leadership 6 Star Green Star certification.
Following on from the certification of Australia’s first 6 Leaf EnviroDevelopment Highway Service Centre in Victoria, and the design for a sustainable truck stop in Queensland; Cadway’s national team provide architectural, town planning, engineering and project management expertise to the retail petroleum market across Australia.
These projects illustrate how Enviropacific’s Cadway continues to lead the way toward creating a more sustainable, energy efficient and healthy future for Australian communities.
