This is what Point Cook, Victoria looked like back in 2015.

Our team placed 80,000m3 of thermally treated soil after the completion of a major remediation project, and then capped the area with a sandy soil to match the surrounding native landscape.

And look at it now.

Background

The remediation of RAAF Base Point Cook saw the establishment of an ex-situ direct fired thermal desorption plant on site, to treat contaminated soil impacted with chlorinated hydrocarbons. Around 80,000m3 of soil was treated and reinstated on site.

We revegetated the site with close to 10,000 native plants, selecting species that were endemic to the region and based on three ecological vegetation classes: coastal saltmarsh, mangrove shrubland, and coastal alkaline scrub.

Coastal plants are built for hardy conditions, which was ideal for their planting in thermally treated soil, typically lacking in the organic content required for plants to survive. Fast forward to 2024, it’s great to see a truly diverse coastal ecosystem growing within our thermally treated soil – evidence that the work we do, and remediation processes can indeed support life and help create sustainable communities.

Jasmine Stefanac, Technical Sales Manager at SOLVE, details, “The thermal treatment project at Point Cook was the foundations of our SOLVE facility. Having proven success with this complex project, the thermal plant was subsequently relocated to Altona and opened to the market in 2019.”

She goes on to add, “We have now successfully treated over 300,000 tonnes of highly complex hazardous waste at SOLVE, accepting shipments from all over Australia.”
